Robert’s Teaching Philosophy

No two students are the same so it is important that one finds a teacher who is experienced and able to adapt to each student. Robert has taught for 32 years, first at Trinity College of Music then the Royal Academy of Music and in September moves to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama Junior Department, London.

Core Principles of Teaching

Firstly and very importantly I am fully CRB checked and hold an enhanced certificate commissioned by The Royal Academy of Music. Click here to download the certificate. Robert Turrell Enhanced CRB Certificate

It is vitally important that the student takes lessons in a comfortable secure environment and uses an instrument and bow of the correct size.

I am very much a technique based teacher. This means I will teach the techniques of string playing to ensure the student can understand and eventually play ANY piece they wish to study and always set achievable targets. So many teachers teach pieces for exams before the student is ready without the them having a thorough understanding of the technique required to play the music.

I am big supporter of friendly music competitions (if the student wants to perform), NYO and NCO.

I do at times enter my students for music exams but only when needed as progress quite often in quicker and more structured without ploughing through exam after exam.

I am well known for being an inspirational teacher with outstanding results. I always try to make lessons interesting, fun and exciting.
